Neuroscience, Biology, and Third-Person Measurement
The outside of the exterior-individual: brain, body, and behavior approached through externally observable and measurable variables.
Zone 6 measures religious phenomena through externally observable neural, physiological, behavioral, and psychometric variables. The zone works from a straightforward methodological commitment: religious practices, dispositions, and experiences involve physiological and behavioral processes that can be externally observed and measured. Disciplined measurement contributes forms of knowledge that first-person report, interpretation, ethnography, and systems analysis cannot supply on their own.
Neural activity during prayer, physiological changes during ritual, patterns associated with long-term contemplative practice, behavioral responses to religious cues, pharmacological processes involved in psychedelic-occasioned experiences, and standardized measures of mystical experience all become objects of inquiry here. Zone 6 renders religious phenomena tractable through instruments and protocols developed in neuroscience, biology, experimental psychology, psychometrics, and related empirical sciences.
The zone includes several distinguishable forms of measurement:
- Biological and physiological measures, including neural activity, hormonal change, cardiovascular response, pharmacology, and structural imaging.
- Behavioral measures, including reaction time, task performance, observable action, and experimentally elicited response.
- Standardized self-report instruments, which translate first-person testimony into externally administered and scored variables.
These forms of evidence are not methodologically identical. A brain-imaging signal, a behavioral response, and a questionnaire score arise through different procedures and support different kinds of inference. What unites them is that the construct, protocol, observation, and interpretation are organized from an external standpoint.
The zone’s distinguishing methodological commitment is its confidence that externally observable variables can disclose aspects of religious life inaccessible to other methods: physiological correlates, behavioral regularities, biological constraints, pharmacological contributions, and measurable associations among practice, experience, and outcome.
This contribution remains bounded. Measurement can establish that variables covary, predict outcomes, change following an intervention, or participate in a causal process. It does not automatically establish what an experience means, whether a religious claim is true, how a tradition constitutes the practice being measured, or whether a measured correlate explains the phenomenon as a whole.
Correlate, predictor, intervention, and mechanism
Zone 6 claims vary in strength, and these levels should not be confused:
- A description identifies an observable feature or pattern.
- A correlation shows that two variables vary together.
- A prediction shows that one variable helps anticipate another.
- An intervention effect shows that manipulating a condition changes an outcome under specified circumstances.
- A causal mechanism identifies a process through which an effect is produced.
A neural region, network pattern, hormone level, or questionnaire score may accompany a religious state without explaining how that state arises, what it means, or what causal role the measured variable plays. A measured correlate is not yet a mechanism.
Measurement is a chain of translations
Zone 6 does not encounter “religion” directly. A phenomenon becomes measurable through a sequence of conceptual and technical transformations:

A study of mystical experience, for example, may proceed through the following chain:
Reliability at one point in the chain does not establish the adequacy of the whole sequence. A scale may measure its items consistently while still relying on a culturally narrow construct. A neural signal may be technically robust while the task that produced it bears only an uncertain relation to the religious practice under study. Zone 6’s rigor therefore depends on transparency about every translation in the measurement chain.
The Zone 5 / Zone 6 distinction
Zone 5 and Zone 6 often share subject matter: bodies, brains, cognition, practice, and perception. Their methodological approaches differ.
Zone 5 studies embodied activity through its immanent organization: the relational processes, organism–environment coupling, and self-organizing dynamics through which a living system enacts a meaningful world.
Zone 6 studies brain, body, and behavior through externally observable variables: imaging signals, hormone levels, response times, questionnaire scores, lesion patterns, and experimental outcomes.
The distinction concerns both explanatory unit and evidentiary logic. Zone 5 treats relational organization as constitutive of the phenomenon. Zone 6 operationalizes components, correlates, and outcomes for external measurement.
By this criterion, much standard-model cognitive science of religion belongs primarily in Zone 6 when it explains religious cognition through externally modeled mechanisms, measurable biases, and behavioral experiments. Enactivist and neurophenomenological programs belong principally in Zone 5, though actual research may coordinate both zones.
The Zone 2 / Zone 6 distinction
Zone 2 constructs and interprets patterns of religious interiority: faith stages, religious styles, God-representations, attachment relations, coping orientations, spiritual struggles, and psychological dynamics.
Zone 6 operationalizes such constructs through standardized instruments, observable variables, behavioral tasks, physiological measures, and statistical analysis.
The theory of mystical experience is not identical with the MEQ30 score used to measure it. A theory of religious attachment is not identical with the questionnaire used to operationalize attachment. A faith-development model is not identical with the interview rubric or scoring procedure through which it is tested.
Many empirical studies coordinate the two zones. Zone 2 supplies the psychological construct; Zone 6 supplies the methods through which that construct is measured, tested, revised, or rejected.
Contemporary psilocybin studies frequently use the MEQ30, a standardized questionnaire derived from earlier work by Walter Pahnke and from W. T. Stace’s typology of mystical experience. The instrument measures the degree to which participants’ reports conform to a specific operationalized model of mystical experience.
Zone 6 asks whether psilocybin, under specified conditions of preparation, support, dosage, and setting, is associated with high MEQ30 scores. It asks whether those scores correlate with outcomes in studies of depression, end-of-life distress, addiction, or wellbeing, and what pharmacological and neural processes contribute to the observed effects.
Zone 1 asks what the experiences are like from within and how adequately the questionnaire captures their phenomenological texture.
Zone 2 asks whether “mystical experience” is a coherent psychological construct and how it relates to transformation, meaning, personality, or coping.
Zone 4 asks how contemporary research settings, therapeutic expectations, cultural narratives, and institutional protocols help constitute the experience that the study later measures.
Zone 5 asks how organism, expectation, environment, attention, and pharmacology participate together in the enacted experience.
The psychedelic-research setting makes several zones unusually visible. It also raises the question of whether those zones are genuinely coordinated or whether psychometric and pharmacological evidence silently receives final interpretive authority.
Where this zone sits in the map
Zone 6 approaches the outside of the exterior-individual through externally observable variables and standardized instruments.
Its inside-facing counterpart is Zone 5, which approaches the organismic exterior through immanent organization and enacted coupling.
Its individual-interior interfaces are Zones 1 and 2. Zone 1 contributes first-person experience and testimony; Zone 2 contributes the psychological constructs that many Zone 6 instruments operationalize.
Its cultural interface is Zone 4, which examines the historical, institutional, and disciplinary formation of the practices, populations, and categories being measured.
Its population- and systems-level interface is Zone 8, which models relations among groups, institutions, ecologies, and historical processes rather than concentrating on the measurable exterior of individual organisms.

- Which conclusions are warranted by description, correlation, prediction, intervention, or causal evidence?
- Where do current findings survive replication, preregistration, larger samples, active controls, and cross-laboratory scrutiny?
- How do expectancy, suggestion, researcher allegiance, study setting, and sampling shape the data produced?
- When does the laboratory preserve the religious practice being studied, and when does it enact a different phenomenon adapted to the instrument?
Key figures and works
Contemplative neuroscience and physiology
Davidson, Lutz, and their collaborators have developed one of the most influential programs in contemplative neuroscience. Their work examines long-term meditators, compassion practice, attention, emotion regulation, neural oscillation, and changes associated with contemplative training. Studies of gamma-frequency activity and other neural patterns have become prominent reference points, though their interpretation remains subject to questions about sample size, practitioner selection, task design, and replication. Daniel Goleman and Richard Davidson’s Altered Traits (2017) offers a broad public synthesis.
The Shamatha Project is one of the most extensive longitudinal studies of intensive contemplative retreat. It examines attentional, psychological, physiological, and cellular variables before, during, and after a three-month retreat. The project is especially valuable for its longitudinal design and multimethod scope, while individual findings—including work related to telomerase activity—require the same caution about mediation, confounding, and causal inference that applies throughout the zone.
Brewer’s work examines default-mode-network activity and connectivity during meditation, along with clinical applications of mindfulness training in addiction, anxiety, and habit change. His studies illustrate both the promise and the risk of translating complex contemplative practices into simplified neural or therapeutic models.
Josipovic studies nondual awareness as a research construct through neuroimaging of practitioners in traditions that explicitly cultivate nondual states. The work represents an ambitious Zone 1 / Zone 2 / Zone 6 coordination problem: first-person reports help identify the state, a construct must define what counts as nonduality, and Zone 6 measures associated neural patterns. The difficulty of defining the construct consistently across traditions remains central.
Lazar’s research examines associations among meditation experience, cortical thickness, gray-matter density, and age-related neural patterns. Her work has been influential in public discussions of meditation and neuroplasticity. Cross-sectional findings should not be interpreted automatically as evidence that meditation caused the observed differences, and longitudinal findings remain sensitive to study design and control conditions.
Ferguson uses lesion-network mapping and related methods to investigate neural networks associated with changes in religiosity, spirituality-related traits, and religious experience. Such studies offer a newer way of moving beyond single-region explanations. They also depend heavily on how religiosity and spirituality are defined and measured, and they do not straightforwardly identify neural “locations” of religion.
Psychedelic and pharmacological research
Griffiths and colleagues helped establish the contemporary revival of research on psilocybin-occasioned mystical-type experience. Their studies use the MEQ30 and related measures to examine acute experience, perceived personal meaning, therapeutic outcomes, and longer-term change. The program has been foundational, while its findings remain inseparable from preparation, expectation, therapeutic support, set, setting, and the Stacean construct embedded in its primary measurement instrument.
Carhart-Harris developed the entropic-brain hypothesis and the REBUS model of psychedelic action. These models draw on neuroimaging, predictive processing, and accounts of relaxed high-level priors. Their empirical basis is primarily Zone 6, while their interpretation of organismic organization and prediction places them at a Zone 5 / Zone 6 interface.
Research at Imperial College London, Johns Hopkins, NYU, UC Berkeley, and other institutions examines psilocybin, MDMA, and related compounds in therapeutic, phenomenological, and neuroscientific contexts. The field’s rapid growth makes methodological caution especially important: blinding is difficult, expectancy is powerful, therapist and setting effects are substantial, and many findings emerge from highly selected samples.
Experimental and mechanistic cognitive approaches to religion
These programs are placed primarily in Zone 6 when they explain religious cognition through externally modeled cognitive processes, measurable biases, behavioral experiments, and third-person explanatory frameworks. Particular works may also cross into Zones 4 and 8 through ethnography, cultural comparison, and evolutionary analysis.
Boyer argues that religious concepts recruit ordinary cognitive systems and often exhibit minimally counterintuitive properties that make them memorable and culturally transmissible. His work is among the most systematic articulations of cognitive byproduct approaches to religion.
Barrett examines agency detection, teleological reasoning, and related cognitive tendencies as contributors to the ease with which supernatural-agent concepts arise and spread. The often-repeated “hyperactive agency detection device” formulation should be treated as one component of a broader program rather than as a singular mechanism that explains religion.
Guthrie develops anthropomorphism as a pervasive cognitive strategy and argues that religion intensifies ordinary tendencies to perceive humanlike agency in ambiguous environments. His work is theoretical and anthropological as well as cognitive, placing it near the Zone 4 / Zone 6 boundary.
Their cognitive theory of ritual competence examines the mental structures by which participants recognize and evaluate religious ritual. The work crosses Zones 2 and 6: it posits cognitive structures and models them through externally formulated theory.
Atran coordinates cognitive, evolutionary, and ethnographic approaches to religion. His work belongs across Zones 4, 6, and 8 rather than fitting cleanly into one. Its Zone 6 dimension concerns cognitive mechanisms and experimentally tractable features of religious thought.
Psychometric constructs, measures, and tools
Psychometric instruments translate categories developed in Zones 1 and 2 into standardized variables. The translation typically involves three layers:
- Zone 1 supplies reported experience.
- Zone 2 defines the psychological construct.
- Zone 6 standardizes, scores, validates, and analyzes the measure.
The resulting number is neither raw experience nor the construct itself. It is a measured representation produced through a chain of operational decisions.
Hood developed one of the most sustained psychometric programs on mystical experience, drawing on Stace’s typology. The scale and its revisions have been used across cultural and religious settings. Questions remain about measurement invariance, translation, and whether apparent cross-cultural convergence partly reflects the construct built into the instrument.
The 30-item Mystical Experience Questionnaire, developed from earlier work associated with Pahnke and later refined through the Johns Hopkins program, is the principal measure used in contemporary psychedelic research on mystical-type experience. Its value lies in standardization and comparability; its limitation lies in the theory-laden character of the experience it defines.
Absorption is not inherently a religious construct, but the scale has become important in studies of mystical experience, hypnotic susceptibility, prayer, imagination, and unusual perception. Its use illustrates how a general psychological trait becomes part of the empirical study of religion.
These instruments often operationalize Zone 2 constructs for Zone 6 testing. Their reliability does not by itself establish construct validity or cross-cultural adequacy.
Syntheses and philosophical interpretation
A broad recent synthesis organized in deliberate conversation with William James. The book surveys empirical research on spiritual experience while also illustrating the difficulty of defining a sufficiently inclusive and measurable domain.
Letheby examines whether psychedelic therapy can remain epistemically responsible under a naturalistic interpretation. He asks whether therapeutic benefit requires the literal truth of metaphysical experiences and argues that psychedelic transformation can possess epistemic value without depending on supernatural conclusions. His work belongs among the philosophical interpretations of Zone 6 findings, outside the empirical program itself.
Historical, cautionary, and contested cases
Their early neurotheology program helped popularize the neuroscientific study of religious experience. It remains historically significant, while the label “neurotheology” can suggest theological conclusions that the empirical findings themselves do not establish.
Persinger claimed that weak, complex magnetic stimulation of the temporal regions could reliably produce sensed-presence and mystical-type experiences. An important independent replication by Granqvist and colleagues failed to reproduce the effect and identified suggestibility as a likely confound. The case is included as a demonstration of Zone 6’s capacity for correction and of the importance of blinding, sham control, expectancy management, and independent replication.
The Method in Perspective
Measurable physiological, neural, behavioral, and pharmacological patterns associated with religious states, practices, and dispositions. Regularities that can be tested across persons and settings. Biological constraints on religious life. Observable effects of contemplative training, ritual activity, psychoactive substances, and religious coping. Findings that can be subjected to replication, statistical critique, preregistration, intervention, and cross-laboratory scrutiny.
The experiential content and religious significance of the state being measured. The theological, symbolic, and tradition-specific meaning of the practice. The ecological setting in which religious life ordinarily occurs. Whatever present instruments cannot detect. Populations excluded from sampling. The historical genealogy of the categories being operationalized. The analytic pipelines, thresholds, preprocessing decisions, and statistical choices through which raw signals become publishable findings.
Correlation treated as mechanism or complete explanation. Neural patterns described as biomarkers before their stability has been established. Group averages attributed to individual persons. Statistical significance mistaken for substantive importance. Preliminary findings presented as settled results. What an instrument can register treated as what matters most in the domain. What the instrument cannot detect treated as what is absent. Physiological evidence used to adjudicate the meaning or truth of a practitioner’s experience.

Critical Formations for the questions of whose bodies have been available for study, whose norms define healthy or mature functioning, who benefits from the research, and whose absence from the sample disappears from the conclusions.
