The outside of the exterior-collective: relations among populations, institutions, networks, ecologies, and historical processes modeled from an external standpoint.

The Zone

Zone 8 models relations among religious populations, institutions, networks, ecologies, and historical processes. Its methods often operate across large spatial or temporal scales, but scale alone does not define the zone. A network analysis of one religious organization may be Zone 8, while a richly contextual study spanning several centuries may remain primarily Zone 4. The decisive move is the external modeling of relations among collective exteriors.

Zone 8 begins from the recognition that religious formations exhibit patterns that no single participant or community can fully see. Traditions spread through networks. Institutions compete, cooperate, differentiate, and decline. Ritual systems interact with political organization. Religious commitments shape patterns of trust, conflict, fertility, migration, and cooperation. Religious institutions co-evolve with technologies, ecologies, markets, and forms of governance. These processes require methods capable of moving among persons, groups, institutions, populations, and historical periods.

Where Zone 4 studies cultural and discursive formations through ethnographic, historical, and genealogical inquiry, Zone 8 formalizes relations among cases, variables, systems, and processes. Where Zone 7 reconstructs religious communication through the operative distinctions by which a social system reproduces itself, Zone 8 models that system and its relations from an external standpoint. Where Zone 6 studies measurable variables associated with individual organisms, Zone 8 studies patterns emerging among collective actors and environments.

The zone includes several distinguishable methodological programs:

These methods differ considerably. Some organize qualitative historical scholarship into comparative cases. Some code variables across hundreds of societies. Some construct simulated populations and ask which macro-patterns emerge from explicit behavioral rules. Some compare contemporary nations or religious markets. Their shared commitment lies in making relations among collective exteriors available for explicit comparison and modeling.

Scale is not explanation

Zone 8 works across several levels:

Person → group → institution → polity → network → transregional system

A pattern found at one level does not automatically explain another.

A population-level association cannot be attributed directly to each person in the population. A model of group selection does not explain the meaning of sacrifice for a particular practitioner. A national decline in religious affiliation does not describe every congregation or community within the nation. A civilizational sequence does not eliminate contingency, local divergence, or the agency of particular actors.

Aggregation can reveal patterns invisible at smaller scales. It can also remove the differences through which those patterns were produced. Responsible Zone 8 work therefore asks both what becomes visible at scale and what disappears through the act of scaling.

From historical record to modeled variable

Zone 8 does not encounter history in an unmediated form. Large-scale findings emerge through a sequence of translations:

Archive → historical judgment → case definition → coded variable → database → model → result → historical interpretation

At every point, substantive choices enter:

Databases and simulations make their assumptions explicit in ways that permit scrutiny and revision. Their precision does not remove interpretation; it relocates interpretation into definitions, codebooks, model rules, uncertainty estimates, and procedures for treating missing evidence.

Comparative synthesis, formal modeling, and constructive appropriation

The page distinguishes three related but methodologically different uses of large-scale material.

Comparative-historical synthesis

Comparative syntheses assemble evidence across traditions, societies, or periods to develop broad accounts of religious change. They may use narrative, sociological, anthropological, and hermeneutical methods while seeking patterns that exceed any one case.

Robert Bellah’s account of religion from early ritual life through the Axial Age is a major example. Such work often coordinates Zones 3, 4, and 8: interpretation and cultural specificity remain important, while the explanatory horizon expands across societies and historical periods.

Formal and empirical Zone 8 methods

Quantitative history, cultural-evolution research, cross-national analysis, historical databases, network analysis, and computational simulation enact Zone 8 most directly. They define cases and variables, formulate explicit hypotheses, and submit large-scale claims to comparison, modeling, replication, and dispute.

Their strengths include formal clarity, comparative reach, and the capacity to identify patterns not visible in individual cases. Their limits include dependence on uneven archives, contested coding decisions, uncertain causal ordering, and the risk that modeled regularities will be mistaken for complete explanations.

Constructive cosmological interfaces

Teilhardian theology, Aurobindo’s evolutionary metaphysics, the New Story movement, and related cosmological spiritualities work with evolutionary and cosmic-scale materials, but their principal method is usually constructive, theological, philosophical, poetic, or hermeneutical. They belong primarily at a Zone 3 / Zone 8 interface.

These thinkers interpret scientific and historical accounts through theological, metaphysical, poetic, and hermeneutical narratives of orientation.

Their warrants differ from those of empirical Zone 8 research. They must be evaluated through philosophical coherence, theological adequacy, responsible engagement with the sciences, historical self-awareness, interpretive fruitfulness, and the ethical or ecological orientation their narratives support.

Their inclusion on this page shows what can happen when Zone 8-scale knowledge becomes material for religious world-making. It does not imply that cosmic theology and quantitative social modeling share the same evidentiary standards.

A Concrete Example

Consider the historical emergence of large-scale cooperation, moralizing supernatural authority, and religious institutions capable of coordinating action among strangers.

A formal Zone 8 study may code evidence across many societies and test whether belief in morally concerned, punitive gods tended to precede, follow, or co-evolve with increasing social complexity.

A comparative-historical synthesis such as Robert Bellah’s Religion in Human Evolution may situate transformations in ritual, representation, and moral universalism within a broad account of cultural evolution while preserving substantial attention to historical meaning and difference.

A constructive Zone 3/8 project may take the long history of cooperation, consciousness, and cosmological knowledge as material for a new religious narrative. The New Story lineage, for example, interprets the scientific account of cosmic and biological evolution as a potential source of ecological and spiritual orientation.

All three approaches work at large scales. Their questions and warrants remain distinct:

  • formal modeling asks what patterns the evidence supports;
  • comparative synthesis asks how large historical transformations can be interpreted;
  • constructive cosmology asks how cosmic and evolutionary knowledge may become spiritually and ethically inhabitable.

Where this zone sits in the map

Zone 8 approaches the outside of the exterior-collective by modeling relations among collective systems, populations, institutions, networks, environments, and historical processes.

Its inside-facing counterpart is Zone 7, which reconstructs religious communication through the operative distinctions by which a social system constitutes and reproduces itself.

Its interior-collective analogue is Zone 4, which approaches cultures, discourses, institutions, and practices as historically situated formations rather than primarily as variables in a comparative model.

Its exterior-individual analogue is Zone 6, which measures brain, body, and behavior at the level of individual organisms.

Its principal constructive interface is Zone 3, where large-scale historical and scientific accounts may be interpreted as sources of religious, philosophical, poetic, or theological meaning.

Robert Bellah, Religion in Human Evolution: From the Paleolithic to the Axial Age (2011).

A landmark comparative-historical synthesis tracing transformations in ritual, representation, social organization, and religious reflection from early human communities through the Axial Age. Bellah’s work crosses Zones 3, 4, and 8: it is historically and hermeneutically attentive while seeking an account of religious evolution broad enough to hold multiple civilizations in view.

Roy Rappaport, Ritual and Religion in the Making of Humanity (1999).

Rappaport treats ritual as a foundational process through which sanctified propositions, obligation, communication, and social order are produced and transmitted. His work begins in anthropology but expands toward a systems-level account of ritual, adaptation, ecology, and human social life, making it an important Zone 4/8 bridge.

Evolutionary and cultural modeling

Harvey Whitehouse, Inside the Cult (1995), Modes of Religiosity (2004), and The Ritual Animal (2021).

Whitehouse’s modes-of-religiosity theory distinguishes imagistic and doctrinal patterns of ritual transmission, memory, cohesion, and organization. His later collaborations use comparative databases to examine hypotheses concerning ritual, warfare, social complexity, and cooperation. The translation of thick historical evidence into coded variables is central to both the program’s ambition and its controversy.

David Sloan Wilson, Darwin’s Cathedral: Evolution, Religion, and the Nature of Society (2002).

Wilson applies multilevel-selection theory to religious groups, arguing that under specified conditions religious systems may contribute to coordination within groups and competition among groups. The framework remains contested but influential in evolutionary approaches to religion.

Ara Norenzayan, Big Gods: How Religion Transformed Cooperation and Conflict (2013).

Norenzayan argues that belief in morally concerned, watchful supernatural agents may have helped support and stabilize cooperation among strangers in expanding societies. The hypothesis has generated substantial empirical and methodological debate about causal direction, historical coding, and the relation between religious practice and social complexity.

Richard Sosis.

Sosis applies costly-signaling theory to religious commitment, communal longevity, and cooperation. His work on communes and religious groups asks how demanding practices may signal commitment, discourage free riding, and stabilize collective life.

Joseph Bulbulia and collaborators.

Bulbulia’s work contributes to the development of evolutionary religious studies through research on ritual, cooperation, signaling, cognition, and cultural transmission, together with methodological reflection on how evolutionary claims about religion should be tested.

Databases, computation, and comparative infrastructure

Peter Turchin, Harvey Whitehouse, Pieter François, and collaborators: the Seshat Global History Databank.

Seshat organizes historical evidence through explicitly defined units, variables, and spatiotemporal coordinates in order to test large-scale hypotheses about social complexity, warfare, religion, governance, and cultural evolution. Its codebooks make visible the conceptual architecture through which historical scholarship becomes comparative data.

Seshat is one of the most ambitious infrastructures for quantitative global history. Its importance lies as much in the methodological disputes it makes possible as in any single finding: case selection, temporal precision, coding uncertainty, missing evidence, expert disagreement, and causal inference all become open objects of scrutiny.

Edward Slingerland and collaborators: the Database of Religious History.

The DRH is a complementary infrastructure that combines standardized and quantified fields with qualitative comments, bibliographic references, and links to historical sources. This architecture keeps comparative coding visibly connected to named expert judgment and detailed historical scholarship.

F. LeRon Shults, Wesley Wildman, and computational modeling of religion.

Agent-based modeling constructs simulated populations whose agents follow explicit cognitive, social, or behavioral rules. Researchers then examine what collective patterns emerge under different conditions. These models make theoretical assumptions unusually visible, but their results show what follows within a formalized world rather than directly establishing what occurred in history.

Network and diffusion approaches.

Network analysis studies how religious ideas, practices, identities, institutions, and authorities spread through relational structures. These approaches can model centrality, clustering, diffusion, conversion, polarization, and institutional influence without assuming that populations are internally homogeneous.

Cross-national and institutional modeling

Pippa Norris and Ronald Inglehart, Sacred and Secular: Religion and Politics Worldwide (2004; rev. ed. 2011).

Their existential-security thesis relates religious persistence and decline to economic, political, and social conditions across national populations. The work exemplifies both the reach and the construct-validity challenges of cross-national comparison: terms such as religion, belief, security, and secularization must remain comparable across very different settings.

Rodney Stark and Roger Finke, Acts of Faith: Explaining the Human Side of Religion (2000).

Religious-economies theory applies rational-choice and market models to religious participation, competition, and institutional change. The approach has been highly influential and heavily criticized for the assumptions about agency, preference, and religious goods built into its explanatory framework.

Constructive cosmological interfaces

The following figures work with evolutionary, ecological, and cosmic-scale materials but generally do so through theological, metaphysical, poetic, or hermeneutical construction. They belong here at the Zone 3/8 interface, with warrants distinct from those of empirical systems modeling.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, The Human Phenomenon and The Divine Milieu.

Teilhard develops a Christian evolutionary cosmology in which matter, life, reflective consciousness, and spiritual unification participate in a directional process oriented toward the Omega Point. His scientific formulations reflect the period in which he wrote, while his synthesis remains a foundational modern source for evolutionary theology.

Sri Aurobindo, The Life Divine and the integral-yoga corpus.

Aurobindo develops a metaphysical and yogic interpretation of involution and evolution in which matter, life, mind, and supramental consciousness express stages in the manifestation of reality. His work does not externally model social systems; it offers a constructive spiritual interpretation of cosmic and biological evolution whose scale creates a powerful Zone 3/8 interface.

Thomas Berry, The Dream of the Earth and The Great Work.

Berry argues that cultures require orienting cosmologies and that ecological crisis calls for a new story of the human within the community of life. His work converts evolutionary and ecological knowledge into a religious-cultural narrative directed toward planetary responsibility.

Brian Swimme and Mary Evelyn Tucker, Journey of the Universe.

Swimme and Tucker weave scientific accounts of astronomy, geology, biology, ecology, and biodiversity together with humanistic reflection on meaning and value. The project offers a constructive interpretation of scientific cosmology, assessed through philosophical, ethical, and religious warrants.

Brian Swimme and Thomas Berry, The Universe Story (1992).

This work helped establish the New Story lineage as an evolutionary and ecological religious narrative. Its central question concerns how scientific accounts of cosmic and biological emergence might become culturally, ritually, and ethically formative.

Alfred North Whitehead, Charles Hartshorne, and John B. Cobb Jr., the process tradition.

Whitehead, in Process and Reality (1929), develops a metaphysics of event, relation, experience, and creative becoming; Hartshorne systematizes this inheritance as a process theism centered on divine relationality and temporality; Cobb extends process categories into Christian reconstruction, interreligious dialogue, ecological theology, and planetary responsibility. Their work belongs primarily to constructive philosophy and theology, with important Zone 3, Zone 5, and Zone 8 dimensions (dialogical, in Cobb's interreligious work; organismic, in Whitehead's philosophy of experience). Its relevance here lies in the transformation of cosmological and ecological knowledge into religious and metaphysical interpretation, and its categories underlie the work of both Delio and Haught below.

Ilia Delio, The Emergent Christ and The Unbearable Wholeness of Being.

Delio extends Teilhardian evolutionary theology in dialogue with contemporary science, technology, emergence, and Christian thought. Her work belongs specifically to a Christian constructive-theological development of the Zone 3/8 interface.

John Haught, God After Darwin and Deeper Than Darwin.

Haught develops a theology of evolution organized around futurity, promise, and unfinished creation. His work seeks an alternative to both reductive naturalism and religious rejection of evolutionary science.

Interface and boundary figures

F. LeRon Shults also illustrates movement across methodological territories.

His career extends from constructive theology and theological anthropology into computational modeling and the scientific study of religion. He is useful for showing that a scholar’s subject matter does not fix a single zonal location; different works enact different methodological perspectives.

Charles Taylor, Cosmic Connections: Poetry in the Age of Disenchantment.

Taylor offers a complementary Zone 3 approach to cosmic orientation. He examines how poetry may disclose relations among self, nature, history, transcendence, and a disenchanted world. His primary treatment belongs on the Zone 3 page, where it broadens hermeneutics toward theopoetics and aesthetic disclosure.

Dissent among historians concealed behind a single code. Uncertainty hidden by clean visualizations. Populations and traditions poorly represented in surviving archives. Intermediate scales at which local institutions, networks, and historical contingencies alter broad patterns.

Constructive cosmologies may leave out communities for whom the proposed universe story does not function as a meaningful orientation, as well as the cultural and political histories embedded in claims to speak for humanity as a whole.

May Overclaim

In empirical and formal Zone 8 work: adaptive or systemic function treated as what a tradition essentially is; scale mistaken for depth; population-level association projected onto individual persons; correlation across cases taken as causation within a case; simulations mistaken for discoveries about actual history; database completeness confused with historical completeness; model fit treated as ontological truth; coding and inference decisions presented as neutral rather than interpretive.

At the constructive Zone 3/8 interface: cosmic narrative smoothing the historical complexity it seeks to interpret; scientific findings used as narrative furniture without adequate engagement with the sciences; increasing complexity converted into moral or spiritual progress; directionality in a model interpreted as cosmic purpose; one universe story presented as the story humanity now needs; constructive theology confused with empirical discovery.

Correctives and Complements

Zone 1 for religious life as it is experienced and practiced by particular persons.

Zone 3 for the hermeneutical, theological, poetic, and tradition-specific warrants through which large-scale accounts become meaningful.

Zone 4 for historical specificity, ethnographic context, genealogical critique, and the interpretive judgments that ground comparative coding.

Critical Formations for the questions of whose archives survive, whose categories define the cases, whose histories disappear into missing data, whose narrative is offered as universal, and who gains institutional authority through the model.

Live Disputes

Live disputes within the zone

Big Gods, social complexity, and causal ordering.Whether morally concerned supernatural agents preceded, followed, or co-evolved with large-scale social complexity. A prominent 2019 Seshat-based article argued that complex societies generally preceded moralizing gods, but the article was retracted in 2021 following criticism of its treatment of missing data. The authors stated that revised analyses continued to support the broad conclusion while acknowledging that the changes were substantial enough to require retraction. The episode offers an unusually instructive Zone 8 case: different ways of coding unknown, absent, and inferred-absent evidence can alter a historical causal claim.
Databases and their politics.Whether historical databases provide neutral infrastructure for comparative inquiry or formalize substantive theories through their units, variables, categories, and temporal boundaries. Missing-data procedures, expert disagreement, archival inequality, case selection, and uncertainty coding all shape what the database can disclose.
Levels of analysis and ecological fallacy.Whether population-level regularities can explain individual persons, local communities, or particular historical events. Zone 8 gains power through aggregation, but conclusions warranted at one level cannot automatically be transferred to another.
Modes-of-religiosity theory.Whether Whitehouse’s imagistic/doctrinal distinction has received sufficient cross-cultural and historical support to function as a causal theory, or whether it remains primarily a productive comparative heuristic.
Religious economies and their limits.Whether rational-choice and market models identify important features of religious competition and commitment or distort religious life by translating practices, traditions, and obligations into preferences and exchanges.
What do simulations show?Whether agent-based models provide explanations of real religious systems, demonstrations of theoretical possibility, or laboratories for clarifying assumptions. The dispute concerns the relation between formal emergence within a model and historical explanation outside it.
Teleology, complexity, and progress.Whether increases in biological, cognitive, social, or institutional complexity warrant claims about moral advance, spiritual evolution, or cosmic direction. This dispute links empirical evolutionary models to constructive cosmologies while also marking the boundary between them.
The status of constructive cosmology.By what standards evolutionary spiritualities and cosmological theologies should be assessed. Their claims may be scientific, metaphysical, theological, poetic, ethical, or pedagogical, and methodological confusion arises when these registers are left unmarked.
One universe story or many?Whether a scientifically informed cosmological narrative can provide shared planetary orientation or whether the aspiration to a common story reproduces universalizing habits that subordinate different cultural, Indigenous, religious, and cosmological worlds.
